Western medical acupuncture involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles with dry needles. The procedure causes the body to release endorphins and natural chemicals that aid pain relief and the treatment of addiction. Acupuncture works by regulating the body's meridians to release energy flow and re-establish the balance of Yin and Yang. It is a natural remedy for ailments such as persistent headache and migraine, back and neck pain, menstrual pain, toothache, trauma-based pain, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and post-operative nausea. It is also used to break addictions to substances such as alcohol, drugs, prescription drugs, sugar and caffeine. Other benefits include helping to break the cycle of bulimia and anorexia. A course of acupuncture is usually recommended because it can take a few sessions for you to see improvements.
